He asked, I said yes!

He asked, I said yes!

I don’t even know where to begin. I sit, fingers poised over my keyboard, ready to share with you the story of one of the best days of my life.

The love of my life asked me to marry him last week, with all (ok not all, but a lot of) Indianapolis watching.  Ben orchestrated this big ruse to propose to me during our DoItIndy Family segment.

Honestly, words are not enough.  You’ll have to watch it for yourself below.

Ben Risinger proposes to SlickLaRoo on Fox59

Considering we already had a wedding date set before this happened, and considering Ben has been telling me fore MONTHS he’s had a “plan,” I am shocked at how SURPRISED I was.  The tears were real, folks.  That’s been the most asked question, since so many knew of his plan and were able to see it play out; “Did you know it was coming?”  Sure, I had my suspicions, but day of, there we so many small things that happened that made me think it WASN’T happening.  For example, an important family member couldn’t be there.  Also, I thought perhaps he would have worn something different…?  I don’t say this to sound like a snarky girlfr—er, I mean fiancé, as I love his t-shirts and cardigan sweaters.  I just thought he’d give it away with perhaps a button down?

So, yes.  I was completely shocked.  I couldn’t imagine a better way for my best friend to ask me to marry him.  I’m so lucky, blessed, grateful, et cetera, et cetera to have found the one who my soul loves.  Thank you for all the congrats all over social media.  Let the wedding planning BEGIN (rather, continue)!!!!

The McRib is back!

I honestly never thought I’d write a blog on my favorite pressed meat sandwich, alas, here I am. Tis the season for America’s favorite “limited time only” treat…and the season for the heated debate: lover or hater of said treat.

One of my favorite friends, @sssemester, posted an article to Facebook about McDonald’s most infamous sandwich. The article, 11 Amazing Facts About McDonald’s McRib (Yahoo! Finance), listed some of the McRib’s ingredients, including tripe (parts of the stomach, from what Wikipedia tells me) and scalded stomach (which, I guess all scalded stomach is tripe but not all tripe is scalded stomach? I digress…). Mmmm, sounds good right? Perhaps pressed stomach meat isn’t everybody’s thing. I get that.

So the more that these facts are shuffled around the internet, perhaps more and more McRib fans will be no longer? I doubt it. Have you ever tasted the deliciousness that is McRib?! I’m not super concerned that this could be some commodity trade (fact #10) or that my meat LOOKS like it’s on the bone but isn’t. I just want to eat something delicious. And delicious it definitely is.

A deep though occurred to me in the comment thread of Scott’s post (where most deep thoughts occur). If some countries can eat fried bugs or the tongue of an animal and these are considered delicacies…then what is the McRib? It’s delicacy of the Americas (patent pending)!

So there you have it. The McRib is back and it’s a delicacy of the Americas! I hope you enjoy a McRib sometime soon yourself. I think I know what I am having for lunch today…

It’s Sussy Week!

Let’s spread love, y’all. The Sussy Project (www.thesussyproject.com) may be my favorite thing to come from social media since I met the love of my life (insert awwwws here).

Not familiar with The Sussy Project? I’ll catch you up. Per http://www.thesussyproject.com, a sussy is a gift given for no reason. Think random-acts –of-kindness-meets-social-media. The Sussy Project doesn’t exist to spotlight the givers, but rather the receivers.

Last week I joined The Sussy Squad…and let me tell you, I am EXCITED! It’s Sussy Week, so we are encouraging everyone to give Sussies here and there. Whose day needs to be made? Do it. There’s much more to TSP than Sussy Week, so you should really check out http://www.thesussyproject.com. I mean, come on, how many times do I have to include a link before you will click on it?

We can forget the holidays aren’t all punch-bowls-of-eggnog and presents-under-the-tree-galore for everyone. Some people really need a Sussy pick me up. Or maybe someone gets a Sussy and it inspires them to pass it on. Check out the website, follow TSP on Twitter (@thesussyproject) and nominate someone already! Check back here later this week to see how I’ve sussified my own little spot of Indianapolis.

Don’t forget to check out other holiday happenings around Indy here. Now get out and Sussy!

To Blog or Not To Blog

I think this is probably the 842nd blog I’ve written on my lack of blogging. I always apologize and promise I’ll see you real soon! Right? Ha. So much for following through. I LOVE to write. I LOVE my blog. I love reading other blogs and weaving my way through social media social hour, but for some reason, I am just not creating the content I wish I put out there. I have scores of ideas (a philosophical diatribe spurred from a bad eyebrow wax), yet the enthusiasm I once had has been lost.
I don’t want to make excuses; I just want to make sure it’s very clear why I haven’t been blogging. I have fallen in l o v e. The better part of the last year (I know, what was my excuse before?), I have met my best friend, love of my life, insert-more-lovey-cliches-here. That shouldn’t be a secret to any of you if you follow me on Twitter or have the distinct honor of being my Facebook friend. It is amazing to know this man and be in his life and start making our life together. Sappy much?
So I find instead of writing, I’m spending quality time with my best friend, making memories. Maybe someday, if snow ever comes again and it’s too cold to go outside, I’ll hunker down and write more.

So that’s really all I wanted to catch you all up on. I really have had this eye brow blog stirring in my head, so hopefully you’ll be seeing that soon.

Xoxo,
Slick

QUASH!

QUASH 2012

What is QUASH, you may ask?! Well, hopefully you follow me on Twitter (@slicklaroo) or Facebook (facebook.com/slicklaroo) and you’ve seen me asking for donations. And hopefully you’ve donated…

But I digress…in case you do not know…

QUASH is the Quest to Unravel Alzheimer’s Scavenger Hunt. The Alzheimer’s Association puts this on as a yearly fundraiser to raise money for Alzheimer’s research and treatment. The DoItIndy Crew (www.doitindy.com) decided to participate because it’s a great cause AND the scavenger hunt sends us around the great city of Indianapolis looking for clues and QUASH challenges.

Getting ready to emcee!

At the last minute, Big Ben (@BenRisinger) and I were asked to emcee the opening and closing ceremonies. After hyping up the crowd for scavenging fun, we set off about the city. Let me just tell you this…any competition that utilizes both body and mind…I was NOT prepared for it! We trekked from the Rathskellar, to Ohio and West Streets to 11th and West, to 11th and Illinois to Illinois and Washington, to City Market to the American Legion Mall to the IPS headquarters, BACK to the Rathskellar. WHEW! Along the way we had to answer trivia questions and participate in challenges. All in the name of QUASH!

Our QUASH challenge photos!

The Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana (@alzindiana) did a great job with this event. I had a wonderful time rallying together with other Hoosiers looking to make a difference…and getting to enjoy our awesome city at the same time!

You can learn more information about QUASH and donate to the efforts of the DoItIndy QUASH Crew here: www.doitindy.com/quash. Give back, Indianapolis!

It was a big scavenger hunt day for me…you can check out the Historic Indianapolis scavenger hunt DoItIndy participated in later that night…here!

The Tyrone Saga

Perhaps you follow me on Twitter or Facebook and have seen either #healtyrone or my weird pleas asking how to open a Saturn Ion trunk.  I haven’t divulged many details as to what has been going on because it has truly been a comic of follies.  But I want to share this experience for two reasons: 1.  Saturn owners need to know what I’ve been through and 2. it’s truly kind of sadly hilarious.

Don’t worry.  This story has a happy ending. :)

It all started Saturday morning.  I drove to my friend Ben’s (@BenRisinger) house to carpool for some DoItIndy (@DoItIndy) events.  Our morning started early and was fun, but when I got back to his house around 11:30 and needed to get on my way for the day, my car didn’t start.  Ironically, I had gotten some things done to Tyrone this week in order to start being more responsible with my car (if you know me, and Tyrone, you know he gets the shaft…a  lot).  So the car doesn’t start and I noticed my lights had been on.  OK, no big deal, I’ll go grab Ben for a jump start.  Easy, right?

The first attempt at jumping…when we thought all that needed to be done was a jump…

Not so easy.  Turns out my battery was deeeead.  But before we figured that out, we had a heck of a time trying to remove what we thought was the battery under the hood.  Turns out in Saturn Ions, the battery is in the trunk.  There’s a post or whatever to jump in the front, that looks like a tiny imposter battery, but isn’t.  Only when we ((Ben) tried to remove it did we realize it was in the trunk.  And when I say “we realized,” I mean John (@MyCarDoc) told us that some batteries are in the trunk.  Thankfully, John was helping us via texts, pictures and phone calls or we may have never found the battery.

So.  We get in the trunk, remove the battery, and are pretty excited that all that is left is to buy a new battery and replace it.  Huzzah!  It’s been at least 2 hours at this point.  We’re hot.  We’re tired.  We’re starving.  So we get the best, fanciest battery at O’Reilly after learning my old battery (never changed, obviously, since I didn’t quite know where it was…) was 0% charged.  We get back to Ben’s, all excited that this ordeal is almost over.  Hit the button on my key fob to pop the trunk…oh, right.  No battery, that’s not gonna do.  So I go to turn the key.  No dice.

Turns out in Saturns, everything is electrical.  Or at least, my Saturn.  So…even turning the key wouldn’t work.  You’ve got to be kidding me, right?  So we start Googling.  Tthis has been common for many Saturn owners.  So how do you get a trunk open?  We Google, Google some more, post to social media outlets, take a crowbar to it (my dad’s input)….everything.  No. Freaking. Dice.

Turns out, we had to jump my car from the front dock thingy we originally thought was the battery.  That way, we’d get enough juice to use the key fob to pop the trunk.  Of course, it took almost 18 hours to come to this conclusion.  So Sunday afternoon I trek back to Ben’s to try this scenario out.

AND IT WORKED!  TRUNK OPEN!  Ben installed the new battery…car turned over…I am ON my way.

Wahooooo!

Wait.  Not so much.  A light blinks on…”NO PWR STEER.”

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?  I call John to get his mechanic advice and I release Ben of his duties, since by this point he’s gone above and beyond the call of duty for a friend.  Again, we’re tired.  We’re hot. We are so over this.  While I was on the phone with John, Ben is inside Googling…again.  Turns out there was a recall for 04-07 Ions for the power steering.  When you change the battery, it resets the power steering.

Are you kidding me?  I cannot catch a break.  We did learn from all the Googling that if you car is less than 10 years old and has less than 100,000 miles, they’ll fix it for free.  Cool, I just broke 100k recently, so now it looks like I’ll need to shell out $500 for a new steering module.  At this point, I was actually very OK with this, since we knew what was going on for once and there was a way to fix it.

But wait!  It gets better!  I actually jumped up and down when I got this news.  Ben called to tell me that his neighbor, also a mechanic, works at a GM dealer, and that my car actually has a 150k warranty so it MUST be fixed for free.  So right now, Tyrone is at Blossom Chevrolet getting a new steering module, and Joe has already called me to tell me that he should be done with him…TODAY!

Moral of the story?  Don’t buy a Saturn (Kind of impossible now, since they exist no longer…no wonder).  And if you need any car help, don’t bother Ben…he’s had his fill for awhile. :)

Latest update as of 6/11 at 9pm:

Joe, the nice man from Blossom called today to tell me that the module was replaced and all is good.  Yay.

But that the car is “dangerously unsafe and shouldn’t be driven.”  I missed all the technical terms, but I do believe something about suspension was mentioned.  Awesome.  So Blossom will have an estimate for me tomorrow and then he gets moved on to my dad’s mechanic for the non-dealer estimate.  But it’s likely the worked needing to be done isn’t worth it…so I might be in store for a new car.  Sad day.

On a somewhat related note, if any sugar daddies out there are looking to rid themself of a fuel efficient vehicle in exchange for like, baked goods, look me up.

Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine!

My whole 30×30 endeavor would definitely have included a zip line if I hadn’t already done this.  All during Super Bowl week I watched my fellow Village dwellers take the plunge over Capitol Street in Indy.  Alas, I never made it.

But, but, but!!!  Now, Indy has a great zip line attraction…Go Ape Treetop Adventure!  Now folks, this is more of an ADVENTURE than just a lil ol’ zip line excursion.  Two to three hours of treetop fun at one of Indy’s best parks…Eagle Creek.

I did it!

You need to go.  And you need to go read more about it here, complete with more photos and video from my experience.

See you on Twitter!  Make sure to say hi @slicklaroo!

DoItIndy!

You’ve probably heard me mention DoItIndy at some point if you follow me on social media at all.  If you’re unfamiliar, the guys at DoItIndy present theTop 5 things to do around urban Indianapolis.  What’s great, these aren’t the typical events you see on just any Indianapolis events site.  To use their words, these are the “eclectic” events of the city. What’s also different is Big Ben and Tolin present these picks to you in a video…that’s far more exciting than just any old list! (Have you checked them out at YouTube or Fox on Saturday mornings at 9:15?)

When I first came across DoItIndy, thanks to their roaming reporter IndyVal, I was immediately drawn to what they do.  As a former urban educator, my heart really lies in urban re-development.  I may not be teaching children in an urban setting anymore, but I really want to see my hometown flourishing…including all the urban neighborhoods that get a bad rap.  And let’s be honest, another reason I love DoItIndy is because I love doing the unexpected around my city!  So mingling social and charitable events with the urban neighborhoods of Indianapolis is right up my alley!

Well, exciting things are ahead for SlickLaRoo and DoItIndy!  I’ve joined the crew as another roaming reporter!  I am so excited to be apart of something that fits into my overall brand (remember that blog? :) ) and will surely be a LOT of fun!  Be on the look out for DoItIndy blogs here and of course, check out http://www.DoItIndy.com for the Top 5 videos and blogs from Big Ben, Tolin, IndyVal, KC the photog and Ms. LaRoo.

Have you missed me?

(You may as well get out your calendar and scroll down to the bottom…you’re gonna be busy this Saturday!)

While I’ve taken unintentional hiatuses from blogging in the past, I have tried my very best to not disappear this time around!

“But Slick,” you may say aloud, exasperated, “You’ve only been gone a week!”

I know, I know.  But a week could turn into a month and then into another month and then next you know it, it’s 2013 and slicklaroo.com has not be updated.  I cringe at the very thought!  (Don’t you!?)

So after some constructive criticism at work (apparently my e-mails are pretty verbose), I’ve decided to do the same in all areas of my life.  While I enjoy my colorful vernacular and using words to paint delicious images in your mind, I get it.  Sometimes less is more.  So…with that said, as concise as I possible could be, I present you with….

BULLET POINT BLOG POSTS!   A brief recap of the life that is Slick…proud?

˚You may be wondering how I am doing with Lent.  Well, folks, I’ll be honest.  Not great.  But if I miss a day (brief catch up-instead of sacrificing something during the Lenten season I am adding reading something edifying/spiritual, thereby sacrificing time), I do make it up!  Right now it’s Thursday and I need to read 3 chapters to be on pace…if that tells you anything.

˚You also may be wondering where Monday MUNCH was this week.  I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume you’re not, but just in case:  never fear!  Something delicious will be back this next Monday!  :)

Mmmm cookie dough!

˚I’ve been LOVING the sunshine here in beautiful Indianapolis.  I love my city in any weather, but if I can go outside without a coat in February, I love it about a million times more.

˚There’s this really rad thing called six4six happening on Saturday (March 3rd, 7pm @ Birdy’s to be exact!).  If you like live music, local music and spending time with Slicklaroo (and lots of other, way cooler, people), really, you should be there.  Six Bands 4 Six Bucks, presented by rickyleepots.com and sponsored by Do It Indy, is sure to be a good, good time.  Rock on, Indy.

Monday MUNCH Volume 8: A New Food Experience

**A note from Slick:  I know, I know…I started this whole Monday MUNCH thing to share recipes and baking gems.  But since I’m in charge, I’ve decided to use this space to go in a different direction on this Monday.  And you’ll be rewarded, I promise.  I’m experimenting with a homemade Tagalong (yes, the peanut butter chocolate cookie from the Girl Scouts!) recipe that I will share very soon.  **drool**

But for now, a new food experience…

If you don't already, you need to frequent the Indianapolis City Market!

Today I ventured down to the Indianapolis City Market (um how much do I LOVE going to the Indy City Market?!  LOVE!)  for said new food experience.  The “urban farm boys” (Josh and Mark) at Fermenti Artisan just opened their retail/deli space in the City Market.  Today they let some of us IN THE KITCHEN, taught us about what they do, and shared some yummy food.

I still have a TON to learn about live food cultures and crocks and kefir sodas…but I encourage you all to get your butts downtown and try their food for yourself.  What’s great is they work with local farmers to bring you to top notch HEALTHY food.

You can get more information at their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/fermentiartisan) and you should most definitely follow them on Twitter (@FermentiArtisan)!  Also…check them out on Fox59 tomorrow morning at 8:15 to see the guys in action!

And if you’re not sold on these dudes yet, check out the yummy food below.

You can get their awesome Sauerkraut there!

I love cheese. Even more, I love local cheese from Trader's Point Creamery, sold at Fermenti Artisan!

Here's Mark giving us the low down on all the yummy food.

Are you drooling yet?!

Now go see the guys at Fermenti Artisan and get your MUNCH on!
