It’s Sussy Week!

Let’s spread love, y’all. The Sussy Project (www.thesussyproject.com) may be my favorite thing to come from social media since I met the love of my life (insert awwwws here).

Not familiar with The Sussy Project? I’ll catch you up. Per http://www.thesussyproject.com, a sussy is a gift given for no reason. Think random-acts –of-kindness-meets-social-media. The Sussy Project doesn’t exist to spotlight the givers, but rather the receivers.

Last week I joined The Sussy Squad…and let me tell you, I am EXCITED! It’s Sussy Week, so we are encouraging everyone to give Sussies here and there. Whose day needs to be made? Do it. There’s much more to TSP than Sussy Week, so you should really check out http://www.thesussyproject.com. I mean, come on, how many times do I have to include a link before you will click on it?

We can forget the holidays aren’t all punch-bowls-of-eggnog and presents-under-the-tree-galore for everyone. Some people really need a Sussy pick me up. Or maybe someone gets a Sussy and it inspires them to pass it on. Check out the website, follow TSP on Twitter (@thesussyproject) and nominate someone already! Check back here later this week to see how I’ve sussified my own little spot of Indianapolis.

Don’t forget to check out other holiday happenings around Indy here. Now get out and Sussy!

Why We Love Things (That Have Always Been Awesome) More Now Thanks to Social Media

OK, longest blog title ever right?  My bad.  Anyway.

(stepping up onto the soapbox)

We love the internet, right?  For sure.  The internet brought you to this blog, how could you not?!  But the internet, while awesome, has made life a bit more…complicated.  Craigslist Killer, infidelity, lost productivity at work, sure.  But then there’s also social media.  Let’s talk about that…as those other topics aren’t really my expertise (not that social media is, either…).

Social media has concentrated the internet for us.  Instead of having to scour the internet for funny and interesting things, we’re able to post and chatter about it all in one place.  Crafts and DIY projects (among much more) at Pinterest, family and friend connections (and their respective drama) on Facebook, and just about ANYTHING on Twitter gets shoved right under your nose.

Today a friend (@tokarrai) on Twitter (and when I say friend, I mean someone I’ve never met but have had the pleasure to interact with on the world wide web) tweeted something that’s been on my mind for awhile.  It started with a rant about Nickelback, but then he said something about zombies being played out.  And this made me think…ok, lots of things are SO in right now because we can all enjoy them together, or commiserate together (when it comes to hating Nickelback as a whole).

Don’t get me wrong.  I love bacon, zombies, hating Nickelback, mustaches, and many other awesome things finding fame (again) on the web.  But really people.  Really?  Must we go on and on about bacon?  I get it.  Zombies are cool.  But like, really?  I don’t know.  It just seems like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest just put it all in our faces 24/7.  Instead, I’m just gonna go on about Gotye memes, post pictures to Instagram and retweet that Condescending Wonka guy.  You know, go against the grain. J

What’s too concentrated for you on the net?

**clunk** (hopping off the soapbox)

DoItIndy!

You’ve probably heard me mention DoItIndy at some point if you follow me on social media at all.  If you’re unfamiliar, the guys at DoItIndy present theTop 5 things to do around urban Indianapolis.  What’s great, these aren’t the typical events you see on just any Indianapolis events site.  To use their words, these are the “eclectic” events of the city. What’s also different is Big Ben and Tolin present these picks to you in a video…that’s far more exciting than just any old list! (Have you checked them out at YouTube or Fox on Saturday mornings at 9:15?)

When I first came across DoItIndy, thanks to their roaming reporter IndyVal, I was immediately drawn to what they do.  As a former urban educator, my heart really lies in urban re-development.  I may not be teaching children in an urban setting anymore, but I really want to see my hometown flourishing…including all the urban neighborhoods that get a bad rap.  And let’s be honest, another reason I love DoItIndy is because I love doing the unexpected around my city!  So mingling social and charitable events with the urban neighborhoods of Indianapolis is right up my alley!

Well, exciting things are ahead for SlickLaRoo and DoItIndy!  I’ve joined the crew as another roaming reporter!  I am so excited to be apart of something that fits into my overall brand (remember that blog? :) ) and will surely be a LOT of fun!  Be on the look out for DoItIndy blogs here and of course, check out http://www.DoItIndy.com for the Top 5 videos and blogs from Big Ben, Tolin, IndyVal, KC the photog and Ms. LaRoo.

2011: a year in review, part deux

You know this time of year everyone is publishing lists about the most shocking, biggest, worst, best whatevers of 2011. And while I was mocking this, I realized my previous post was just that. Cool, Kelly you’re soooooo one of a kind. Oh well. Any list my nephew makes is pretty rad.

However, as it’s inevitable as you near the new year, I keep thinking about this last year. And there’s one thing that stands out in 2011 more than ever.

Drumroll…………..

B-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-lllllllllllll…. (I love onomatopoeia. That’s my drumroll sound…)

TWITTER!

Now, those of you who know me well, know I don’t go far in a conversation without at least one “I’m so gonna tweet that” comment. So you’re not shocked, I’m sure.

But I feel like for any and all of my friends, family, acquaintances, Internet never-mets-whether you’re aware of it or not, I must give love to The Twitter.

Pre-2011 I think I had met three people from Twitter. Thanks to being on the Battle of the Burbs contest with the Smiley Morning Show, I had an influx of followers. One such follower is now a true blue friend whom I enjoy foodie and movie dates. One meet was purely accidental last fall at the Zac Brown Band concert when Dave Smiley (it’s kinda weird how much the SMS show is playing into this) retweeted me and I found myself sitting behind a fellow Twitterer. And I mean literally. Section 112. He was row 2, seat 7 and I was row 3 seat 8. How crazy is that?

And then comes 2011. The Year Twitter Took Over My Life. One morning I pocket tweeted (the curse of smart phones, natch), and the one and only Paul Poteet retweeted me, as a joke. Well, from that retweet, came another new follower who became a friend IRL (in real life, how Internet geeky am I!?). I’m not sure how the rest of my followers-that-became-friends came about, but at some point the coolest kids formed a trivia team, I met some Tweeps at concerts, social media events, realized I had mutual friends with others and on and on. I just adore how Twitter makes Indianapolis feel even more personal.

Words cannot express how special some of these people have become to me. I used to have to spend a lot of my energy trying to explain what Twitter is, what purpose it serves and why I don’t feel weird when I’ve met someone from Twitter. Now, those closest to me see that not only does it serve a professional purpose (I’m no social media expert, but it’s helped build The Savvy Sitter some…and apparently I’m now working on building my brand. :) ), it’s given me friends I’m grateful for.

Yesterday I tagged along to a social media event that allowed me to connect with, and meet, even more friends from Twitter. Honestly, these people are amazing. It’s nice to be in a room of people you’ve just met, but you feel like you know so well. And of course, some of this may be projected or somewhat…inauthentic. But the majority of these folks are pretty freakin’ awesome.

And now…thanks to the magic of Twitter (and the ridiculous amount of free tickets given away on said social media network), I get to ring in the new year tonight with a large group of these people. I’m pretty lucky.

I’m looking forward to starting 2012 off right.

Peace. Love. Twitter.

My first food swap!!

Before my busy week overtakes my life, I just HAVE to share about my first food swap experience.

I absolutely love social media. I’ll spare you the details on this (for now–perhaps another blog sometime), but I have social media to thank for introducing me to a lot of amazing people, places and things. Thanks to Twitter, I was introduced to the concept of food swaps and eventually invited to Indianapolis’ third food swap.

I was very nervous to attend something so focused on food. I mean, I love food, but I’m no Betty Crocker or Paula Deen. I’m not even like, a pseudo foodie. But lately, I’ve taken a liking to baking and decided to try this neat event out. If you’re not familiar, a food swap is exactly what it sounds like. You take a food item (starter recipes for soup, baked goods, canned jams, homemade hummus–one lady even brought her own homemade vanilla!), set it up nice and pretty, and mingle. While you’re mingling, you can sample and bid on items you’d like to swap your items with. I took 6 bags of homemade thin mints, so I was able to swap for 6 items. Of course, I bid on more than 6, so I had to really try and figure out what I was willing to give up my thin mints for.

And boy. Did I clean up. :) I came home with 2 cookie mixes (orange dreamsicle cookies anyone??), waffle mix, meringue mushrooms, homemade biscuits, a soup mix and granola! But wait, Kelly, that’s 7 items…I thought you only could swap as much stuff as you take? Ah, well. Don’t worry…I didn’t steal. The lady that made the granola had extra, so I got lucky to take an extra!

If you’ve never been to this event, you must go. Follow @indyfoodswap on Twitter for more information. And sign up quickly! Tickets go fast!!
